Incubators, Accelerators and Your Start-Up

In Case Study #30 I take a look at accelerators, incubators and how a start-up can gain access to the resources that are on the inside of these important organizations.

It’s not easy to get your startup accepted into an incubator or accelerator. The application process is specific, often rigorous and takes place only a couple times a year.  Once inside, the burden is on you to take advantage of the capital resources, group mentoring and 1:1 coaching from many of the world’s best entrepreneurs.  In the end, it’s more than worth it.

You will also see that the incredibly successful and famous Y-Combinator is but one of many outstanding incubators and accelerators launching start-ups to the next level.

CB Insights – Making Bank on Information

In Case Study #28 I take a look at how information – data, not media – which is a very real form of content, can be a valuable stand-alone product or a value-add a current service or product.

Yelp and Angie’s List are examples of service products created from data that is curated and organized into consumable information in a way that’s helpful to the consumer.  In the B2B world, CB Insights is an extremely innovative company that has taken data points from the world of startups and venture funded companies and curated that data to create useful information that is worth buying.

Mergers & Acquisitions

In Case Study #27 I take a suggestion from the audience and examine Mergers & Acquisitions.  There’s been press lately about potential mergers including an Apple & Disney deal – which would give both companies something that they want.  On the other hand, there have also been rumblings about SiriusXM and Pandora getting together – which is a part of a longer story about the search for profits in the cut-throat business of music streaming.  I also examine the types of mergers and how and why they typically happen.

How American Apparel Lost Their Shirt

In Case Study #25 I take a look at the saga that was American Apparel.  Beyond the tawdry headlines lies a case study in the need for product visionaries/marketing savants to be balanced with finance and operations acumen.  This balancing force on the management team needs to have a strong personality to appropriately “handle” a forceful, driven leader.  Not to slow them down, but to ensure corporate, market and product dreams and aspirations are balanced by the ability to “get it done” and make an optimized profit in the process.

Apple: 12 Years Without The Master

In Case Study #23 I take a look at the 12 lost years of Apple.  Yeah, yeah many people will protest that statement.  But you cannot deny the malaise and flat-line existence of Apple during the tenure of Sculley, Spindler and Amelio.  Rather than dwell on items that you can read about in any number of books, I thought I’d use this week’s case study to discuss strategy.

This Episode includes a “How to” look at Blue Ocean Strategy and the now-famous four actions framework.  This is a key lesson you can certainly use in your business or career now and in the future.
